Housing, Not Evictions or Warehousing Work Group
Members of the Campaign have been working locally to unite the struggles of people facing eviction in both public and private housing. For instance, at the end of last year, the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign successfully obtained a partial moratorium on “economically motivated evictions” in Cook Country. You can find some media coverage here.
In addition to Eviction Defense, other Campaign Members are working locally to develop alternative community-based models of ownership in relation to land. For instance, Picture the Homeless in New York City has been using crowd mapping to count vacant properties – publicly and privately owned – and is using a number of tactics to transform the use of vacant spaces, including direct action occupations and renovations. Check out the map here.
We know other communities across the United States are facing and struggling with similar issues of eviction defense and thinking about how to transform land relationships.
See our first solidarity letter calling for a national moratorium on economically-motivated evictions in both public and private housing here.
