Working Principles

The Campaign’s Working Principles represent the values we have agreed must guide all our policy, strategy, and processes.  The Campaign’s Working Principles are:

  • Housing is a Human Right.  We agree that human needs create human rights obligations on the part of the government. Housing is a human right because it is vital to human development and the securement of other basic human needs.  One of the fundamental strengths of the Campaign is our recognition of our need to work together across issues of housing and homelessness and build bridges with the human rights framework.
  • Transparency.  The Campaign is a vehicle for us to share information and strategies, as well as develop collective policy goals, strategies and action.  We agree to be open and honest with each other, which means not withholding information, including with regards to resources, spending, funding, and not making compromises for individual gain to the detriment of other Campaign members or our collective objectives.
  • Accountability.  We agree to be accountable to each other and with regard to our collective policy positions, strategic plans, and processes.
  • Unity and Inclusiveness.  We will work to build consensuses and unity among organizations and people.  Everyone is heard in the consensus-building process.
  • Capacity-Building.  Collective work should build capacity, not burn out resources.
  • Leadership Base.  Our leadership is representative of and speaks clearly to people struggling with violations of the human right to housing in the United States, particularly our most vulnerable.  Decision-making will defer to on-the-ground experience and ideas if they do not have such experience in a particular area.
